But these two worlds don\u2019t always speak the same language. Without strong <strong>PLC integration<\/strong>, warehouses miss opportunities to automate tasks, optimise crane movements or even let equipment prepare work autonomously overnight.<\/p><p>To overcome this gap, <strong>Siemens<\/strong>, <strong>Quinaptis<\/strong>, and <strong>Thomas More Hogeschool<\/strong> joined forces to build a safe, accurate and scalable link between <strong>SAP EWM<\/strong> and <strong>programmable logic controllers (PLCs)<\/strong>. Their collaboration shows how combining expertise leads to smarter warehouse automation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d135eb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6d135eb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Connecting SAP EWM and PLCs: two worlds, one challenge<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-479aa94 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"479aa94\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Logistics teams rely on <strong>SAP EWM<\/strong> to manage inventory and goods flows. Automation engineers use <strong>PLCs<\/strong> to operate cranes and warehouse equipment. These domains traditionally work separately, making integration complex but highly valuable.<\/p><p>Quinaptis had already been exploring ways to optimise automated warehouses through SAP\u2019s <strong>Material Flow System (MFS)<\/strong>. But deep automation expertise was required to build a reliable bridge to PLCs.<\/p><p>That\u2019s where <strong>Siemens<\/strong>, the market leader in PLC technology, stepped in.<\/p><p>Together, Quinaptis consultant <strong>Dieter Baert<\/strong> and Siemens automation expert <strong>An Lietaert<\/strong> explored various integration paths. The turning point came with the idea of using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siemens.com\/en-us\/products\/industrial-digitalization-services\/virtual-commissioning\/\"><strong>Virtual Commissioning<\/strong><\/a>\u2014testing a system virtually using a <strong>digital twin<\/strong> before real-world deployment.<\/p><p>Using <strong>Siemens NX MCD<\/strong> combined with <strong>PLC\u2011SIM Advanced<\/strong> (Simatic S7\u20111500), the team set out to create both a real and a virtual warehouse setup.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a4525d elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"9a4525d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/quinaptis.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Siemens-.webp\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-2215\" alt=\"Siemens\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1b36205 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1b36205\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Building the project team: expertise meets fresh talent<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-04b9310 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"04b9310\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>To accelerate development, the two companies partnered with <strong>Thomas More Hogeschool<\/strong>, known for its strong PLC programmes.<\/p><p>Professor <strong>Frank Peeters<\/strong> assigned two motivated electromechanics students\u2014<strong>Gillian Stevens<\/strong> and <strong>Stef Dierickx<\/strong>\u2014despite them having no prior experience with NX MCD or SAP.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ed63d1d elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"ed63d1d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/quinaptis.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Siemens-New-Conferece-center-02-09-2019-04.webp\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-2216\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b81c9ac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b81c9ac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The project team brought together:<\/p><ul><li>2 experts from Quinaptis<\/li><li>2 experts from Siemens<\/li><li>2 bachelor students from Thomas More<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The students received intensive training: first on Siemens NX MCD, then on SAP EWM with guidance from Quinaptis. This multidisciplinary setup proved to be one of the project\u2019s biggest strengths.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a5d7838 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a5d7838\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Creating both a physical and digital proof of concept<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eae8c15 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eae8c15\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>To validate the concept thoroughly, the team worked with both <strong>HiL (Hardware\u2011in\u2011the\u2011Loop)<\/strong> and <strong>SiL (Software\u2011in\u2011the\u2011Loop)<\/strong> approaches.<\/p><h3>Physical model: a miniature warehouse<\/h3><p>A <strong>Fischer Technik automated warehouse<\/strong>, controlled by a Siemens PLC, served as the hands\u2011on environment. This enabled the team to:<\/p><ul><li>refine communication between SAP EWM and the PLC,<\/li><li>test commands and responses,<\/li><li>validate real\u2011world behaviour.<\/li><\/ul><h3>Digital model: the warehouse\u2019s digital twin<\/h3><p>In parallel, the students built a full <strong>NX MCD digital twin<\/strong>, allowing them to:<\/p><ul><li>simulate crane movements,<\/li><li>uncover issues earlier,<\/li><li>test faults safely and proactively,<\/li><li>debug faster without needing physical hardware.<\/li><\/ul><p>The combined approach delivered a <strong>fully functioning proof of concept<\/strong>. The NX MCD tool not only verified communication between SAP EWM and the PLC, but also showed the concept was <strong>scalable to real\u2011size warehouses with industrial cranes<\/strong>.<\/p><p>And the potential doesn\u2019t stop there.
